Gas safety is important all year round, but it is not always a household’s top priority. Gas Safety Week – coordinated by Gas Safe Register – provides a platform for the gas industry, consumer organisations and individuals to focus all our communications about gas safety in one week, generating interest in the media and having a greater impact among the public.

As part of gas safety week we at Macfarlane Heating Services will focus on a variety of topes to help increase awareness and the importance of using properly qualified and registered Gas Safe engineers to regularly check and maintain you gas appliances.

This blog will focus on what to do in the case of a Gas emergency.

What to do if you smell gas

It’s crucial to act quickly in a gas emergency. These are the steps you need to take to stay safe:

  • Get fresh air immediately; make sure you open all doors and windows to ventilate the area.
  • Turn off the gas emergency control valve (also called gas emergency shut off valve) at the meter, unless the meter is located in a basement or cellar or at the LPG bulk tank or storage vessels.
  • Extinguish all naked flames and don’t smoke.
  • Don’t operate electrical switches (including turning light switches on or off) because this can ignite escaping gas.
  • Contact the relevant National Gas Emergency service number for your area. We’ve listed these numbers in the next section.
  • If the attending emergency operative identifies an issue with any gas appliances, follow their advice concerning the use of the equipment. Where advised, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer to fix the appliance and check it’s safe.
  • If you’re feeling unwell, visit your GP or hospital immediately and let them know you may have been exposed to carbon monoxide.
  • Don’t turn the gas supply on again until it’s been checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Combi boilers have seen a surge in popularity across Ayrshire and beyond in recent years. We felt that now would be a good time to answer some of the common questions we get about combi boilers!

What is a Combi Boiler?

The “combi” in the name is short for combination, and that’s because this type of boiler serves two functions: heating your home and providing hot water. A regular boiler makes use of tanks of hot and cold water, which will be distributed as you need them. However, the combi boiler does not require the storage tank. When you turn the hot water tap, the combi boiler ignites and provides you with all the hot water you need.

Advantages of a Combi Boiler vs Regular Boiler

Combi boilers come with a number of advantages over their more conventional counterparts. Firstly, combi boilers are much better suited to smaller homes or flats. This is because a combi boiler uses up a lot less space. By freeing yourself from the various water tanks, a lot more space becomes available in your home. With space at a premium, this goes down as a big win for the combi boilers.

Because they are smaller, they are generally more cost efficient when it comes to installation too. Not only are they more cost efficient, but they require less time to install for engineers. So while your neighbour is waiting around for their regular boiler to be installed, you can have your new combi boiler up and running in much less time.

In terms of energy efficiency, combi boilers once again come out on top. This is because the boiler will only heat up water when you request it, i.e. when you come to do the dishes, wash your hands or go for a shower. Traditional boiler systems, on the other hand, will normally heat water a couple of times per day. Once the water is heated it is then stored in the hot water tank waiting to be used.

In situations when the water is heated but not used, this represents a great waste of energy. In this day and age, it’s becoming more and more clear that we cannot afford to waste energy; efficiency is key.

Here it comes, the freezing cold Arctic Winter we’ve been warned about! The temperatures are set to plummet across Ayrshire in the coming weeks, blanketing our driveways with snow, icing our roads and increasing the demand for boiler repairs.

Commercial Installation Project

Our team have been well travelled in recent weeks with a trip across the border to install a heating system for a client at their new facility in Barnsley.

Project Background

The client had recently purchased a new manufacturing facility which was to under go a complete refurbishment to serve a dual purpose as workshop with a office area to accommodate staff.

Existing Heating System:

The office heating was supplied through radiators that had individual thermostats and appeared to be in reasonable condition as was the pipework, the boiler and pump feeding same is non-operational, obsolete and required to be replaced.

The existing hot water boiler was a gas fired unit, while operational was leaking and obsolete.

The factory unit had no heating as four of the five existing air heaters having at some point been dismantled and were lying on the ground. Again these heaters were obsolete, probably 20-years old and even if they were reinstalled should the customer have required any parts for same they would be difficult if not impossible to obtain and the operation of the system would be of poor efficiency.

Solution:

Office area:
A wall mounted Keston boiler was installed with a welded low loss header arrangement which was fabricated off site. Pipework was taken from the boiler, in copper to same at a L.L.H. thereafter the pipework taken and connected to the existing heating pipes with a new circulating pump fitted.

Hot water was supplied via a 125L model of Sadia unvented cylinder, heated via an indirect coil from the Keston boiler L.L.H. with pipework via a motorised valve and pump.

Overall control over the heating/hot water was via a programmer located at boiler.

Gas pipework was rerouted and reconnected to suit, tested and certified. The boiler has a unique 2-pipe flue system comprising of 2×2” MUPVC pipes that was taken horizontally to atmosphere approx. 4m, one fresh air inlet and 1-exhaust gasses.

Workshop Area:

10-off combat CMP 35 UTN ‘U’ tube radiant heaters complete with all necessary propriety support system was supplied and fitted – these units were suspended from roof structure at predetermined height (9m approx.)

The existing gas pipework system was extended to each of the aforementioned heaters, valved at each unit with the final connection being approved flexible type.

All gas pipework was pressure tested, commissioned and certified, additional isolating valves were fitted as necessary in keeping with good practice.

Control over the system was in two zones to suit Client requirement.

Result

This was a large space to heat but within half an hour of commissioning the workshop units unit, a comfortable working environment had been achieved.
